Insights for Emergency Department Scribes

Amanda and Elaina, two ScribeAmerica employees working in Emergency Departments, share their experiences and the difference ScribeAmerica has made within these departments and in their healthcare careers.

Amanda Lazur, Ambassador, Special Operations

Being a medical scribe in the Emergency Department has been such an incredible experience. It’s one that I would recommend to anybody who is interested in medicine.

As a medical scribe working at a trauma center, I am part of a team that never stops. I get to explore medicine by seeing all of the different roles and specialties that create this team of life-saving individuals. This includes doctors, nurses, PAs, NPs, EMTs, and so many more. With this, as a scribe, I’m able to build my network as I continue my journey through medicine.

In the emergency room, you’re in an environment where you are learning every single second of every day that you’re there. As a scribe, I’m at the physician’s side non-stop, and I get to witness firsthand all of the procedures, exams, and healthcare interventions that go into providing their patients the best care that they possibly can to help them. I’ve seen a ton of procedures, including chest tube insertions, intubations, suturing, orthopedic traumas, reduction procedures, and a lot more.

My time in the ED has been a true value on my journey to medicine, and it’s an experience that’s going to remain with me throughout medical school and throughout my career.

Elaina Ponder, Chief Scribe

Working at ScribeAmerica has greatly impacted my life. I’ve not only been able to learn more about medical terms and abbreviations, I’ve also been able to work alongside doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to learn about how different symptoms and lab results indicate a patient’s condition and also what treatments are given for those conditions.

I’ve also been able to witness and observe different traumas and procedures that happen in the emergency department. As a scribe, I’ve seen some things such as intubations, laceration repairs, and dislocation reductions.

Working at the medical center, as a scribe, I have also been able to really observe the different roles within healthcare and make a decision on what I want to do with my future. For anyone who has any interest within the medical field, I highly recommend working with Scribe America. You gain a unique experience and knowledge and also gain clinical hours for any applications you may do.

Before working with ScribeAmerica, I knew that I wanted to work in the medical field, but I didn’t know where my passion was best related to. Whereas now, after working with ScribeAmerica and getting to observe and form these connections, I was able to realize that my passion relates the most with nursing.

I highly recommend working with Scribe America to anyone with even the slightest bit of interest within the medical field.
